Laws & Ordinances

Michigan offers immense opportunities to recreate with an Off Road Vehicle on public lands. In fact, there are over 3 million acres of National Forest lands and more than 4 million acres of State Forest lands offering 2,400 acres of scramble areas, 3,300 miles of designated Jeep routes, ATV trails, Motorcycle trails and tens of thousands of miles of National Forest, State Forest and County Roads available for un-licensed vehicle use.

The challenge for ORV operators is that each area, like the National Forests and the State Forests, has varying regulations for ORV use on their lands. Even more, regulations are different between the same Forests, within the same peninsula and between the peninsulas. Each county in Michigan also has varying regulations for ORV use on their roads and even this can vary between townships within the same county!

The variations in regulations can be as simple as a speed limit change or the requirement for an illuminated brake light, to only certain roads being open. Some local communities’ roads are open only to ATV’s and are closed to dirt bikes while others have a minimum seat height!

Off road Venture has painstakingly collected and researched every land managing agencies rules, regulations, ordinances and laws right down to the city level! We explain these regulations and put them together in an easy to read and understand format that will make recreating in Michigan fun and easy!

Our Guide to Michigan’s ORV Rules and Regulations publication also includes information on the location of each and every trail in Michigan; the type of vehicle that trail is maintained for and also includes information on local businesses. Our map products work excellent with this publication as they highlight the trail system and show you which National Forest, State Forest and County Roads are open to ORV’s!
